My pal and his wife left rented bricks and mortar to live in one in the summer of 2015. They paid £4500 for a caravan and the idea was to use it for a couple of years and save some cash up, the the cost of the site was a lot less than £10 a night, inc electric hook up.

The nearby river burst on boxing day and swept their (uninsured & top left in the pic) caravan, car and all they owned away.

Was that Esholt in Shipley?
Some caravans were found washed miles down river, very sad.

What are you insured for?
Motor risks?
Fire and theft or Flood and storm?
Also, i doubt anyone would insure a caravan and its contents if used as a permanent home.

Motor risks are covered by the car insurance. Certainly the fire, flood and storm. I have never questioned maximum nights.

We had an Eriba Puck. Best described as a tin tent. Fits inside a garage so no storage costs. Light enough for even smallest car to tow.

You could say the same with no house insurance and massive flood or fire damage.

Unfortunately if you're not insured you roll the dice..

I've "camped" one and off for many years.

Back in the 80's I toured everywhere with the children including Spain with a small 4x4 and a trailer tent.

My first was a Dandy, a solid thing with ply walls and insulated roof.
I moved on to a canvas trailer tent, but missed the quality and solidness of the Dandy.

Much later we bought a static.

We recently looked at large twin axle tourers and small motorhomes after we sold our static.

I like the small motorhomes but they don't have the creature comforts for my better half.

So in the end we settled for another static.

The Dandy.

Yes it was Esholt, not the travellers site but the sports club. I can't recall why, but he tried to get it insured without success.
Suspect as they were using it as a permanent home, my insurance renewal this year was £0, exactly what it has been for the past 4 years, that's £300 saved it would appear, like all insurance you pays your money & takes your chance, or you don't pay your money & takes your chance. I figure that as our van is worth around £2000 I'm happy not to insure it.

Very true
I used to have a 5" x 4" trailer (one of those 'Caddy', from Towsure), it was awful behind the Discovery, as it couldn't be seen................. until it appeared in the mirror on the wrong side

It was replaced with an Ifor-Williams P6, that was much better, but still nowhere near as good as the 14" twin-axle I sometimes borrowed

Is that pavement part of your private land?
