Really can't decide whether to join the ranks of the two wheeled commute...

I ride an mtb right now, quite happily up to 35 ish miles in a trip. Work is about 17 away.
I could get a shiny spesh allez on cycle to work and get off my ass in the mornings.

Save petrol money for wine.

But, I'm a teacher, and will have to use the skanky pe changing rooms and showers before the kids arrive as we don't have those shiny corporate changing rooms that I saw in Nokia bristol... Gutted...

Do I take on the commute and varooka risk? Is it time to just mtfu?

Seriously, why not start off 1 day a week, then build up.

Feck it, I'll just go for it... U guys are right.

Reckon the starting off one day a week is a good one.

Just looked on bikehub, if I stop fannying around with road choice I can cut it down to 14.

Mtfu time!

And it gives me a justification for another bike when her indoors asks.

Win / win.

Cheers for the advice.

For a few years I did a commute of 21 miles in each direction. But...

1. I only rode 3 days a week.

2. I only rode to the office from February to November unless it was REALLY nice weather.

3. I needed to crash out on a sofa for 30 mins after getting home.

The benefits were huge. I was lighter, fitter, faster etc... I no longer commute and am heavier and slower as a result.

I also think I was better at work than when I drove, but that may be bunkum.

However... If it's 17 each way, I might consider the following, which I did for my 21:

1. First few times, drive in with bike in car. Ride home and ride in the next morning then drive home with bike in boot.

2. Allow yourself a halfway stop for the first week of doing both ways on the same day.

3. Build up slowly. 34 miles a day, 5 days a week is... ummmm.... anyway, it's a long way.

4. If you push over that distance you will need to eat the right breakfast (porridge is fab) and eat the right lunch. Timing of food also comes into it. You don't want to ride two hours after a fatboy pizza, which I often tried and never really mastered...

Bottom line: You will do it and you'll love it. Some days you won't love, but that's the same with cars, trains or aeroplanes.

Good luck!

17 miles first thing in the morning (in the dark) this time of year battling with commuter traffic with the thought of 17 home, first time around might put you off for life...or you might love it.
At this time of year I get a feeling of doom at hometime and Im doing doing 8..my commute is a mare.

As Bicycle says can you lob the bike in the car and park up 10 miles from work and cycle?

Does an Allez take a rear rack? you will need panniers I guess for all of that homework you teachers mark

15 each way here

Starred off last year on MTB, but now moved to faster CX bike

Look at something with disc brakes

Genesis Croix de Fer or Vapour ( disc) are comfortable and really fast with 30-32mm slick tyres. 35mm knobblies for winter. Both take racks. Panniers are a must and I am well chuffed with my Croix de Fer

Don't you have some staff toilets you could change in? Seems like a better option than the kids changing room.

I really suggest cycle commuting. Some great fun, and you can beat all the traffic!

Get on 'yer bike!
