Colour TV? Pah, It'll never catch on, I see no difference at when watching my favourite Laurel and Hardy films.

There are Freeview (DVBT) boxes with UHF RF output, so Arch's move to colour is all NT's fault for getting the wrong sort of box!

Does anyone still make monitors with monochrome black and white displays, which could be plugged into a receiver box?

The boxes I suggested are becoming rarer. I've just checked my usual supplier and both of the makes they did are now shown as discontinued. There's still one on Amazon link but it's a lot more expensive.

Really there isn't much point for Arch, as she presumably already has a colour licence and TV.

Keep the B&W set for a few years and it will be a valuable collectable....

Yes, it was one of the deciding factors. Renewing her licence seemed a good point at which to bring her into the 20th 21st century.

It was a spare box from my folks so no choice in the matter.

I think Arch's B&W tv is still there though.

Yes, I still have it.

As I recall, my switchover cost nothing for the box and the monitor (both spare from NT), 50p for a signal booster, 50p for an extra cable for something or other (both from a car boot sale), and and extra £100 on the licence!

We did discuss trying to use the B/W, I think, but I got all giddy headed about the prospect of finding out what colour the Queen Vic's kitchen was, or something....

All you had to do was ride to Comet or Currys when Eastenders was on and have a look on one of their flashy display 60" sets. Much cheaper than getting into this new fangled colour telly lark. It'll never catch on anyway.

You're not even married yet and that NT's already being a bad influence on you. I'll tell your mum!

My Mum adores NT. I think she really decided he was A Good Thing when he replaced her bathroom light pull cord switch when it broke a day before the whole family descended for Christmas.

I rather think she feels he's a good influence on me, despite the tractor in his hallway.;)

Now that has to bee a really classy way to get into your future mother-in-law's good books! Ten out of ten for NT there.

btw what colour is the Queen Vic's kitchen?

I can't remember, I don't watch Eastenders much any more!

It's funny with my Mum. Whenever we visit, there's some little thing that needs doing, and if NT sees a little job that needs doing, he wants to do it, but she's terribly concerned that he'll think she's always got jobs for him to do so she's always terribly apologetic, and will only ask after a great deal of "Now, please, don't feel you have to, I can probably manage without it, I hate to bother you..." beforehand. Of course, NT doesn't mind in the slightest, especially when it's something that saves her attempting a ladder (she gets dizzy), or if he gets to do a bit of problem solving.

This last Christmas, we resorted to secrecy when we spotted a dodgy light switch and connection, which involved a trip out to get parts on Boxing Day, and then shutting ourselves in our room for an hour. Lord knows what she thought we were doing.

I'm fortunate that they also get on like houses on fire anyway. Especially when I do or say something that I realise is just like my Mum would, since NT is not too worried about the fact that I'll turn into her one day...
