Uhmmm .... I really want to feed the wee birds, but I'm spending a fortune feeding a colony of pigeons and a family of Jackdaws too

You have to pick the right type of food. I don't use the seed mixes as they include grain/wheat which the pigeons like. I buy white millet which the smaller birds eat. You can also try sunflower hearts.

I have an idea on making a bird feeder that the big birds cannot get to.

There are loads of examples if you look at the companies who sell food & supplies. Usually a big cage around the feeder.

If the small birds drop seed on the ground you'll get the bigger ones feeding there. Another reason I don't feed seed mixtures is that the sparrows here throw anything they don't fancy on the ground.

I started feeding the goldfinches, robins, blackbirds and doves in our garden but now have a flock of 10 white pigeons devouring the lot!
