I think reading the report, actual act of going round the corner, through an amber light that was turning red, usually at speed, was the main cause of the victim being knocked down, I remember being told on driving lessons that you should slow on approaching traffic lights, as they have a nasty habit of changing from green to red!

I have always "not liked" the concept of things hanging there

At one point a garage that serviced my car started hanging those tree scented things from it when they serviced it

I always took them off because even if they hid very little - they did confuse the view
especially the view off to one side that you might not be concentrating on but notice

Exactly, but it's the whole thing, not just the dangling detritus from the mirror, the actual stupid maneuvers I see on a daily basis, are staggering, but are just the norm nowadays

On my ride to work, if I go by road all the way, there's a blind crest, where the road can't be seen in entirety for almost 100yards
I sit higher in my Kodiaq, than a normal saloon/hatchback, when I drive that way, & my view is still limited
(taken just after purchase, before its predecessor was taken away by the new owner)


I'll try to position myself so that only an absolute idiot will attempt an overtake, but the cock-wombles still do
Out of every 10 rides, i might get 2 attempts/surprisingly successful overtakes
The view here is different to a drivers eyeline, as the scanning camera is on the roof, a metre (??) above the driver

I've also witnessed a few door mirrors knocked off, & a nose to nose, low enough speed for no airbags!
My offered witness statements have included wordings such as; "as a licence holder for over 40years, I maintain that your insured drivers abilities/awareness of the road fall far below the standards of a reasonably competant driver"

I know that road well, I used to enjoy a ride along the cycle path to the right, then cross over to the pub car park and get onto the canal, but on the road bike I'd be going in the direction of the camera car, as well as the crest, the chicane traffic lights uphill are a bit dodgy when you throw motorised vehicles into the mix too

I have noticed that a lot of cars stop well back from the white lines at traffic lights and roundabouts
sometimes over a car length back

I have two thoughts:

Positive thoughts is they can have more momentum once they see a gap and are already accelerating before they enter the roundabout.

But my negative thought is the driver waiting can accelerate which makes the driver behind start acceleration. Then suddenly the drummer in front slams on the brakes in the hole that the driver from behind slams into them thus can claim for insurance. Bar stewards.

The other location(s) for me, are at the end of Ferry Lane, when I've turned left onto Aberford Road (A642)
- there's a traffic island/pedestrian refuge by The Graziers, some try to overtake there

- not far after, I tend to turn right, to go up 'Stanley Hill' (by Rosemount Garage/ASDA now), I can have an arm out to signal a manoeuvre, after looking, start to move across & get other cock-wombles overtake!

AT roundabouts I have seen people do this in situations where it just means they cannot see past the car on their right

at traffic lights - the possibility of it being so they can see the light is OK - but I have seen it happen on dark disman winter days where no-one needs a sun visor down

Some people are just weird
