All other things being equal (fuel consumpion, passenger and load capacity, carbon footprint etc) a Land Rover Defender is a less civil vehicle than a regular family sedan thanks to the shape of the front of it and its inability to stop quickly. Jacking it up only makes it worse. When they come into contact with items such as other vehicles and children's skulls they tend to do more damage. These are facts which cannot be denied by even the most vociferous of 4X4 supporters.

Let me make my position clear, I don't want to see four wheel drives/ off-roaders banned from our roads. But what I do want to see is the driver's of such vehicles drive with an amount of extra care and consideration equal to the extra risk these vehicles pose to other road users. That's all. For the same sorts of reasons of fairness and balance that men should never to use their strength to pose danger to those more physically weaker than themselves. And Rottweilers get muzzled.

I object when car drivers hoon around like idiots. I object more when drivers of off-road vehicles hoon around like idiots. Call that anti landy if you want.

I was, and would still like to be, a Land Rover owner.

I hate cyclists who hoon around at speed through red traffic lights, on and off the pavement, through pedestrianised areas, pulling stunts on the public highway and on pavements and architecture, cycle around in packs at speed with no regard to the highway code, race on the public highway and don't give a damn when they run into people.
Many seem to have badly assembled or maintained bikes, with no lighting, reflectors, brakes and sometimes not even a saddle.

When does any one need a knobbly tyred moutain bike in a city, or a BMX anywhere other then at a stunt park, or even a lightweight carbon race bike off a race track?
You are nutters the lot of you! You should be riding about on 'Dutch style' bikes at 5-10mph with a basket on the front and sticking to the cycle paths.


OK, enough of the tongue in cheek response.

Vehicles of all types have a place somewhere. I imagine a carbon frame road bike is akin to a Range Rover Evoque.
Unless you are telepathic you cannot always be certain why a person is driving a vehicle with off road capabilities. Some actually use them for what they are designed for but, unlike bikes, it is significantly more costly to own and store more then one vehicle so it could be the only vehicle the driver has.
Some own one so that they can enjoy playing off road on pay and play sites or do international competitions.
It is similar to groups of cyclists doing an Audax I believe, or going out for a ride in the country just for the fun of it.

The actual issue should be the attitude of the person using the means of transport, however it is powered and there are idiots on two and four wheels equally.

If I have the need for one I will get another big Land Rover to replace the last one I had. There are not a lot of vehicles of that size that can tow a 4 ton trailer and act as a winching platform. My estate car is already at the limits of what it can tow and winch safely.

I've fitted two bikes into a Fiat 127 in the past - my folding bike is actually used to go on the train, so I'm not quite sure I understand your point.

I'm not calling anyone intolerant. I'm simply demonstrating how uncomfortable stereotyping makes people feel. It appears to have worked too!!. Perhaps we can get back to sensible evidence -based posts rather than insults eh?

But he wasn't hooning around like an idiot when you saw him, was he? Simply owning a piece of advertising merchandise on his sun-visor doesn't make him a psychopathic bully does it?

I'm not defending anything or anybody.... god knows we all crave safety on the roads!

This is true, within the same confines as any other CCer, who can post and behave as they wish.

It has been said often enough, mods were and are, without exception AFAIK, CCers who Shaun has asked to assist in keeping an eye on the content. They (we!) have no obligations and no requirements. We are cyclists and fellow humans, there is neither training nor reward and we do what we feel is correct but we are not infallible.

We are subject to the same rules as anyone else, and the same sanctions, report posts you feel don't fit the rules, whoever has posted them. You would not be the first to report a moderator, we discuss any reports regardless of the poster and, although we don't act on every report, that process and discussion happens without reference to the poster.

Ultimately, we are all there to do Shaun's bidding and the knowledge of the extra spot light on us may temper some of our more emotive responses.

What it does not mean, and never has meant, is that we can't have our own opinions.

I would answer yes. And I have one. And I love it.

It's big and now 15 years old and far greener in the overall scheme of things than buying a new car more frequently.

Particularly helpful as I can get 4 passengers, 4 bikes and a weeks baggage for 4 people for a week away.

Sure there are tools that drive these things. But there are tools in all walks of life, some of whom seem to be writing in this thread.

I have the fortunate postion of belonging to all three groups [NO - NOT the Idiots, RLJers, Stereotypers ] but I have a Land Rover, I Cycle and I'm a Mod. I endeavour to be civil in all of them. Sometimes I fail ; sometimes I succeed .

Let's all of us recognise that there are numpties in every walk of life, who do some of the same things we do, whom we consider give a bad name to what it is we do .... and let's remain civil and not try to score points against each other.

Someone put a sticker on their vehicle with a politically loaded statement on it - passers by are therefore entitled to comment on it. That isn't stereotyping, that's freedom of speech.

I actually like the statement, you're a long time dead so get out and live, do something outside the normal 9-5 existence, whether it's out in the hills in a Landy, hill walking or cycling, all of which I think make me feel more alive. Some 4x4 drivers are idiots but then so are some bike riders. I used to drive a white van, not all of those are driven by idiots but it doesn't stop us all tarring them the same, don't even get me started on BMW drivers...

I don't understand 4x4 in cities but living in the country there are times a 4x4 is needed, especially a real Landy, which is one of the greenest vehicles out when the life cycle carbon impact is considered.
