WANT !!!

I think my brother in law got the 900 one, will see what he thinks of it, I think my Hope Vision 2 might be due a battery by then, wonder what they are like quality wise, light output on the face of it is the same as a Lupine Betty.

I want whatever the riders in Derwent Valley tonight had on the front. 3 of them descending towards me looked like I was going to have a Spielberg-type Close Encounter.

Trouble is I was running the opposite way so no chance to ask

Tried to read that and got lost very quickly, electronics isn't my thing. Anyone know enough to do a layman translation? I did pick up on the same bit as Cranky re the potential for burn out within a couple of years, but after the 90 day warranty period.

Could something like this be run from a dynamo or is a battery only type setup?

I got the impression battery only and the likelihood it would probably give out after 12 months or less if you used it on Hi beam all the time. They did say it got pretty hot on Hi, but there was probably sufficient surface area in the aluminium body to keep it cool providing there was air flow. I suppose ambient temperature would also play a part. Less likely to be able to cool in 28C as opposed to -5C.

The older single light in comparison seemed pretty good to me. They reckon this new light only pushes out just over 800 Lumens, so not the 1400 Magicshine claim. Apparently as the voltage is a little high for the spec of some of the electronic components (drivers I think), the resistors get hot causing the light to dim. Also some of the sealing is not so good and threads for bolts to secure the micky mouse side lights are not deep enough in the housing so if you try to tighten if they become loose they just become stripped. So one of the guys used something called welding or solder paste to fix this. They recommend using silicone sealing although not domestic silicon sealant which contains a substance, sorry I forgot the substance, which as the silicon cures acetic acid (vinegar) is created as a by product which could potentially eat into the circuit boards.

Thanks, I sort of get most of that I just can't imagine ever wanting to buy something that needed that level of tinkering out of the box. What I'm not sure about is whether it's necessary, some of those guys seem to just want to tinker for the sake of it. Wouldn't they be better just buying a shell and building up their own lights if they know that much? Or am I missing this altogether here?

Those chaps DO build their own which is why they dismantle commercial systems to see how they work. If they hadn't taken apart the new MagicShine kit, you wouldn't know that running it on Hi all the time will burn out the components...

The fact that it would cost MagicShine a few cents per 5000 units to fix the issue gives you an indication of the quality of the device overall I would say - an indication that you otherwise wouldn't have had
