Well that's just comparing apples with pears.

Apples are less dense than water, pears are more dense. Mystery solved.

If you'd ever taken a pear to school in a brown paper bag dumped in with all your books and pens and compasses, you'd have learnt that a pear is mostly syrup, which is denser than water. My Kent Set was never the same.

But....why?

Fruit has evolved to spread the seeds of its trees. Most likely an apple is the most efficient way given its natural habitat and likely local wildlife that eats and helps spread them. Pears will have evolved with a different most efficient fruit due to different climate and different wildlife.

Add to that human intervention is creating varieties and you have divergence.
