One of those tiny but pleasing moments

Coming through one of the security squeeze-points in the City yesterday, I was of course in primary. A WVM behind me decided to express his displeasure by driving two feet behind me and sounding his horn.

There was a police officer manning the checkpoint, so I slowed and asked him if he'd mind having a word with the driver. He'd clearly already seen & heard it, as he just smiled and nodded and put out his arm to flag down the WVM.

This morning a white van pulls up behind me, again about 2 foot away from my back wheel. I make a pull back gesture and he gesticulates to me to be over to the left (cars parked on left and no space for a safe overtake with oncoming traffic). So as I turn into the hospital I see the van pass and realise that it is one of our drivers (NHS driver who delivers radioactive material to our nuc med scanners). After dumping stuff in my office and heading to get changed he enters the department.

Magnatom: Good morning

Driver: (smile quickly disappears when he realises who I am)

Magnatom: Yes I am the cyclist from this morning

Driver: Mumble, grumble,...too far out in the road grumble...etc

and so on


He wasn't apologetic at all, and continued to insist that I should have been in the door zone. Had he been fine about it, I'd have left it. As he wasn't I'll be speaking to the head of the department. Oops!

LOL! The radioactive sourced are well protected! Anyway research has shown that radiologists who work with radiation (and so receive small ish doses, actually are healthier than those who are not exposed to small excesses of radiation. Radium belt anyone?!

Anyway, back to the OP, if you see the same police officer again, it might be worth finding out what happened!

Heading south along the dual carriageway here this morning I was overtaken by a taxi driver while attempting to pull out into the outside lane to turn right at the approaching T junction, only for him to dive in front of me to turn left. He stopped at the lights and when I pulled alongside him gave me a really filthy stare through his window.

Until, that is, I pointed out to him that his left filter light had already turned green and he'd been so busy giving me the evil eye he'd failed to notice.

Not a nice bit of road to use. When I worked near there I preferred the underpass near the rail station (assuming it hasn't filled up again with rubbish & water)

I don't use any of the cycle paths in the city. There's nothing really wrong with that bit of road. The worst bit of the commute is the filter lane just before the Gogar roundabout coming from Maybury. I'll be glad when they've completed the works and shifted the barriers. I hate it when drivers feel they absolutely must squeeze past even when there's blatantly no room and will almost shove you over if they feel they have to. I could come up and over Drum Brae, I suppose but I'll bet that's just as bad at that time of the morning.

It's still clear! Mind you, they're digging the whole area up for the tramworks and installing new pipes etc, so I'm assuming that the drainage will have had to be sorted to prevent the tramline subsiding (if the trams ever run),

maybe that's why we have an ageing population problem - i'm sure I read somewhere that dentures used to have some nice white and shiny radioactive material in them...
