The OP turns out to be the brother of a colleague of mine. He has a broken collarbone and concussion but (apparently) no other serious injuries. Says he can't remember much other than hitting the windscreen of the car.

Yes - agreed - get well soon. (And sorry to come in on the thread in such a fashion yesterday!)

Last night was a meander home - still people want to undertake and 'race'; and today I took a train to Baker Street (old and stiff - nothing new - aching and sore - different! ) and walked up to Kentish Town in the sun. I saw a mix of instances of cyclists 'RL jumping', undertaking and carelessly disregarding pedestrians.

What's the bloody rush? It seems to invite trouble, and I would encourage folk who do this stuff to take a step back and enjoy the experience more - not contest it all the time. Commuting is a journey, not a race, and we can all do better.

From what I can gather, people act that way on a bike "because they can".

They know they can squeeze between a van and an HGV (which I saw yesterday near Cannon Street) and snake up to the ASL; "it's there for us so we have to use it!" This sort of mentality disregards safety; people clearly think that the 20 seconds it takes to creep up the side of the bus is less dangerous than merging with traffic and waiting where everyone can see you.

And God forbid you don't get away from the lights first!

I guess we have all been guilty of competing at some point. Some riders just have the mentality that they have to be first away from the lights and will not be overtaken by any other cyclist.

Commuting is a necessary evil that anyone who works in London must do, whether by train, bike or car. The most important part is to get there safe and if possible enjoy the process, and for me the only way to enjoy it is to go by bike.

I was travelling at about 15 - 16 mph along the bus lane towards West Hendon when - bam! A person in a nissan micra with children in the back and another in the front decided to look at me... for ages

You should try not to be so goddamn fascinating!

Glad you're OK Teef!

How true. And I'm just as guilty as anyone else of taking Silly Chances ("There's a whole second gap before the next van, I'm sure I could make the turn ...") Must. Chill. Out.

Hope the elbow stops hurting. And GWS to the other chap.
