Do you think that tinned tomato soup and baked beans (not on the same plate, obviously) could constitute one of your "Five a Day"?

This question is prompted by the latest tv advert from Heinz. There are lots of people on this forum with expertise in nutrition. Am I right in thinking that the quantity of salt and sugar in those particular items outweighs any benefits of the tomato content?

I am seriously considering complaining to Heinz about this advert. I consider that it is pushing the limits of the definition of "Five a Day".

"Five a Day" is about nutrition?

I thought it was how many cigarettes we should smoke. I thought I was really looking after myself by doubling it to ten

One assumes that Heinz has checked the rules (from the govt.) regarding 'Five a Day' labelling and that it complies.
Tomato soup may contain fibres and is a good source of Lycopene which has certain health benefits. Whilst it contains sugars, so does fruit and often at high levels. It's better to eat Tomato soup than say Chicken soup or Ministrone.
Beans also are a significant source of fibre, protein and slow release carbs and I guess that's why they're included. Again, baked beans are healthier than Spaghetti hoops or many other canned foods.
Whilst I admit to being some kind of Food Scientist, I'm not a nutritionist, so they're my semi-informed opinion!

Baked Beans have been cited as one of your five a day since the idea came in, not just by Heinz.

Looking at a can of Basics beans from my cupboard, the salt in a half can (a portion) has 16% of my daily recommended intake of salt (amber on the traffic light system), and just under 10% of my recommended intake of sugar (green). So it hardly cancels out the fibre and vitamins. If I ate nothing but crisps for the rest of the day, my salt might be way over, but that would hardly be the fault of the beans.

Nothing wrong with beans, although obviously you can't eat five portions of beans and claim to hit your target, just as you can't claim it if you just eat 5 apples, you need a mix.

Anyway, apparently it ought to be 8 portions, but the Govt thought no one would think they can acheive it, so they lowered the bar.

One chocolate eclair:

Chocolate - comes from beans.
Flour - comes from a sort of grass.
Butter, and cream, both come from grass.

So that's 4 right there!

Thank you Arch and Fab Foodie for that info. The tins of tomato soup (all two of them) in my cupboard do not list the percentages. I can see that as part of a healthy diet, it is not unreasonable to include tomato soup and baked beans.

Very occasionnally on a cold day I have a tin of soup, but it never occured to me that it was one of my "five a day"

Now about those chocolate eclairs, chocolate peanuts and chocolate Brazil nuts - are there any left for me?

I've always pictured it in my head in the same way that Diet Cola is a diet product - its a diet product only as part of more balanced nutrition, not if you carry on eating Cheeseburgers and salty fries.

A can of Baked Beans is part of your five a day if you also eat some fresh fruit and veg. It probably doesn't count (as much) if your other four are also processed food.
