Some of you may remember this post. Today the Police have been in touch to tell me that they have finished and closed their investigation into the incident, the second one in the post. They managed to trace the driver. But he has told them that he does not remember any incident with a cyclist and he cant remember having a pasenger in the car that day. Also since then he has got the paperwork for the car sorted out, the car was not registered to anyone at the time of the incident, so theres going to be no action taken against anyone.

Seems a strange tale about the car's registration, surely there's something wrong there, quite apart from your incident?

Sounds a little odd to me - the car's paperwork wasn't in order at the time, yet it was on the road. Must be some kind of an offence in that?

On the other hand, maybe a visit from the cops has spooked him a little and he might think twice about behaving like this again, or allowing his passenger to do so?

I hate that it leaves you filling empty. Thats one of the reasons I have loads of cycle paramedics and cops as friends I've needed them as well.

At the time of the incident I gave the registration number to the Police and their checks didn't show a registered keeper. The Officer I spoke to said it was something they came across occasionally but did not explain further, I should have asked. But since then its all been put in order. It seems the registered keeper is not the driver but he has all the permissions and the insurance.
CotterPin like you I am hoping the visit from The Police might make him think twice about behaving like this again, or allowing his passenger to do so, but I have doubts about that happening.

Occasionally when a car is sold on, the seller doesn't always let the DVLA know who the new keeper is (as required by law), nor does the new keeper notify the DVLA. When the DVLA send out SORN/tax disc letters, the original keeper will write back/telephone DVLA that they no longer own the vehicle (or some other reason), and because of that, the DVLA update the Police National Computer in relation to the vehicle, and the fact that the current keeper is not known. This makes it then difficult for the Police to trace any driver of that vehicle at that time, as it is unknown who even owns the vehicle, let alone who drives it.

Hope that helps clarify things.

On the face of it the driver is not playing ball with the police, and is not telling them who the passenger was etc... and playing dumb. Unfortunatly though in these cases, unless there is good cctv/witness description etc... the Police will really have nothing to go on, but at least they have made enquiries with the owner, and like the above post says, hopefully the driver will think twice......

I was knocked off my scooter two years ago by a speeding car, hit and run, two solid witnesses got the reg and one a description of the driver

coppers turned up and dealt with it seriously

a letter weeks later told me that there was no-one in at the registered address when they called and that was it, was I happy with that? I said no

nothing else happened, you do wonder what the use of reporting things is when the police are fobbed off so easily


'I don't remember' seems to be an acceptable excuse for traffic incidents these days
