Online passwords

I tend to remember my passwords, but forget which ones I've used where. I have an app on my Blackberry called "Password Keeper" with my various passwords stored in it. It's proved useful when my memory needed jogged. It does have one drawback though. It needs a password to access it....

I have a different one for each site, giving it a tenuous link to something about that site (content, design, name, whatever) so that I can recall it.

I have the same method as Arch - a set of about four which I rotate with the same number of user names. Sometimes I get gonged out while I'm trying too many combinations; then I have to look them up in my spreadsheet, which is protected by a password I never forget and encrypted within that.

I don't have any of my passwords written down anywhere. Having them on a Post-It underneath your monitor is fine until you get burgled.

I do recall some years back watching a program on TV just when use of the internet was becoming commonplace; there was a IT "guru" being interviewed, who told viewers that they should have a different password for every website that they used, that the password should be a random combination of numbers, upper case and lower case letters, and that each password should be renewed on a monthly basis, but that they should not all be renewed at the same time. He said all of this with a big, cheery, enthusiastic smile, before bursting into excited laughter as he told the interviewer, "You know, I spread the randomising of my passwords through the month by changing one or two each day!"

If I need a password, then I either take a title of a book eg "the colour of magic. Terry Patchett" and use that so in the example my password would be for a four to eight letter one "tcomtp1". And if I need a long one then I would run all the letters together "TheColourOfMagicTerryPatchett". And if I need an all number password I would use an isdn number. Eg 0385603428.

I only used to use one very simple, easily remembered password on what I thought where non-important sites, ie Facebook, CC, Ebay, Photobucket. For my banking & Email I had specific ones.
But I discovered after being hacked, or someone figuring out what my password was that Facebook is actualy very important..A lot of damage can done if someone goes online pretending to be you & writing offensive status's!
I have an arc of Post It notes around my desk nowdays...I'll be ok as long as no-one breaks in & steals/copies them!

Like some others, a secret book of individual passwords for each site which are themselves coded so if book is found by some one with ill intent, the usernames and passwords are useless unless decoded . You can't trust no one.

This all reminds me of the system my Mum used to have for hiding a spare housekey.

First of all, get into the back garden, either over the tall side gate, or via the neighbour's house and garden.
Then find the correct rock in the rockery. Lift it, and find a key to the brick coalshed, now home to the freezer and various tupperware and storage tins.
Open shed, and find correct tupperware.
Open it and find house key.

She has a key safe now, with a combination....

I have a kind of system which I use and it means whatever site I'm trying to access, a seconds thought and it comes to me.

I can't tell you what it is sorry.

For banks, I use them so often I find I can remember the long numbers and password sequences ok. I don't have a good memory though.
