I was in a festive mood which was enhanced by a walk in the city centre where I purchased top up presents. The Salvation Army band was playing in one of the shopping centres and there were carol singers out and about. It was a lovely atmosphere. The joy has been punctuated by two deaths. I'm attending a Jewish funeral tomorrow. A neighbour died suddenly in Puerto Rico and tomorrow is the first opportunity to bury him since his body arrived back on Friday night. I spent most of this afternoon sorting out travel arrangements to the funeral for my elderly carless neighbours. I learned on my return home from a gig tonight that my best friend's wife died suddenly this afternoon. This will curb the festivities and fun that I had planned for my visit to his family on Monday. However I was brought up to celebrate the life of the deceased and I'll be doing my best to support the grieving relatives over the next few days before recommencing the celebration of the festive spirit unsullied by religious beliefs, the grumps of the disgruntled and the poor weather thats forecast for the next five or six days.

There's much to look forward to: Christmas dinner even though it's turkey and not goose, the exchange of presents - I might not survive my wife's opening of her fart proof pants but the fall out (sic) will be interesting, the Boxing Day fry up with pickled onions even though @Noodley disapproves. Dellzeq's Tourette in London a week today and my annual New Year's Day bike ride to the Tan Hill Inn. Life is still good even though at times it doesn't feel that way.

Merry Christmas to you all in an unambiguous, unadulterated way and may the joys of the season be unspoilt by circumstance.

@vernon You may not see this, but its always hard or awkward, moreso if you've known the person for a while. But at this time of year, when others will be celebrating, you may not feel like having anything to do with it. For what ever reason a death at this time of year hits you more than at any other time. That includes anniversaries or birthdays that would have been.

Plenty of excitement here. I managed to sneak a real tree in much against Mrs Cube's wishes, and the kids loved it. They're down at in the midlands today meeting their new cousin, as my nephew's partner gave birth last week. Needless to say I couldn't get any leave so I'm at work today. Next job is to download and install MIL V1.0 (I'm off to fetch Nanna this afternoon) and that'll be the end of my fun. I work Late turn Christmas Eve until midnight and then back on Boxing Day at 7.am. As for the New Year, I've been rerostered to work until midnight on the 31st, and the second is my fiftieth birthday. So of course my leave has been refused. I was going to celebrate on the 4th, but again, leave refused. F*ck 'em. I retire in three years time and can begin my life again.

The cooking has started. Two big beef and pork joints in the over on low already. Can't be getting my clean oven mucky, so both in roasting bags (locks in the moisture too).
