I have just picked up a Planet X bike frame which is painted in glorious black and red Matt finish! It doesn't look too bad at the moment but it is already starting to get grubby. Finger marks are already showing making it look old and used. Why do people go for these finishes? It has taken years for people to begin to accept the matt finish paint, even F1 were slow to paint their cars that way , which I think looks horrible!
A scratch on gloss paint can be easily repaired if it hasn't gone through to the primer, either a quick polish or a bit of wet or dry and then polish and the scratch is gone. Not that simple with a Matt finish! Ooh look I have a nice shiny patch now! I don't know how small repairs are done as gloss finishes are easily sprayed and blended in by polishing. That can't be done with a Matt finish. I assume that a whole panel would have to be sprayed.
Matt finishes don't have the same impact as brand new glossy paintwork. Dull as old boots comes to mind.
I think my new frame will get the same treatment that my black Carrera Zelos got. A good polish with some Farecla G3 soon had it nice and shiny!
