    When the story broke, while I was having breakfast, they were saying the ship had struck 'an object'. Funnily, I sort of guessed it might be ice, being in the Antarctic, and all that. Either an iceberg, or a flotilla of amoured penguins...

    No mention yet of oil spills. There have been siren voices predicting this sort of incident for ages as the number of tourists have risen year on year.

    Unfortunately, a combination of pristine ecosystems and absolutely no containment or clean up facilities does make for an unhappy combination.

    As the UK claims some form of sovereign rights to the most visited areas, perhaps we should take the lead in trying to manage these problems?
