I don't know anyone that's done that... but then I have no friends.

I only hope that (at least) one of the bikes belonged to the driver. It doesn't make matters any better but at least they'll feel less bad about doing it. I'd hate to be responsible for doing that.

I've done it with a 20 minute old cube. Leisurelake bikes Wolverhampton, the (council) car park at the back has a barrier, luckily I only scraped a little paint off the head tube. A friend of mine wrote off his, his sons and daughters trek mountain bikes on a barrier in Manchester plus a fair bit of damage to the roof of his car and all 3 barracudas , it's a little more common than one thinks.

Was in a French ambulance yesterday with a 2.3m high roof and the driver's mate had clearly been trained to remind the driver when they approached anything like a péage barrier or the French/Swiss border post.

Goof grief! That was expensive. I bet the bloke who drove that car wished he hadn't offered to give his mates a lift.

Nothing serious, I hope!

[I've just seen your 'travel insurance thread' so I now know that your son got injured when skiing.]

Could've been worse. Could have been a nice 531 frame.
a friend of mine had a barrier come down of a 531 bike. he opted for an alu frame with the insurance money

Happened to a guy with his carbon-seated recumbent on the roof, fitted facing the back ... so the seat took the full impact.
  • we had been warned beforehand of the height restriction
  • carbon 'bent seats aren't cheap
  • he's only done it once

Don't worry Maz, the French are a bunch of xenophobes (though I love them dearly) so they in turn are fair game for that kind of joke.

I know someone who did that....

(no, it wasn't me)

My bikes go on the back of the car. Sea kayaks go on the roof, but at least then you've got two bloody great orange things sticking over your bonnet, so you're more likely to remember you've got them on!
same here , Brother in Law. made a mess of the roof on the car but only pringled a wheel
