I wish I had my Speedy down here in Brizzol after today's encounter with the road (and Greedo's lovely wife...) I've got a pair of IRC Blizzard tungsten studded ice tyres stuck in York too. Pah.

Does anyone have a pair of stabilizers to fit a Colnago that they want to sell?

The roads are a bit greasy here but there clear. This evening I went out with the intention of going slow but I got caught up in the traffic flow and ended up going faster than I'd planned; I hit 28.3mph somewhere, perhaps down Dundas St but the wide 37 tyres coped well and I took a pretty straight route.

My ride home was better than the way in, but the roads were icy, you can see that glint, all the way home it was the same, not as bad as this morning but still very alarming.

I use some back roads and they just dont get gritted, I should have been ok as I personally got a gritting from the gritter that went past on the main road.

I think cold is ok, very cold is still ok but when there is water involved, all bets are off, my car has a light that tells me its cold and if the wheels spin a light blinks at me, my bottom does the same thing on the bike, I will be in the car tomorrow as mainly as I need to pick a PS3 up but I think after today I would have anyway, its just too risky, I dont want to hurt myself and put myself (and my wife) of me cycling as I love it, its been six months plus now and a thousand miles and I cant see me going back to 100% car but nearly getting a Land Rover sliding over me shoot me up big style, not a problem normally but with the ice its a real possibility, even with me being super vigilant, I had just eaten to far into my comfort zone today and bravado and forum talk only gets you so far.

J4CKO - those roads you ride on were where I came off 2 of the three times in one ride - I was pretty beaten up after the first - that was a 30 MPH slide...., the other two were a pain - just off into the verges between the Frozen Mop and Chelford Rd.... not fun....

Dry isn't too bad, but a freeze after rain is....

You are right, until you have a nasty incident, it's all good and 'oh look at me, I can cycle in all weathers'. It knocks the wind out ya sails when something happens that could have seriously injured or kill you comes looking for you.

You may have seen in another thread that I came off on black ice last Friday. I am working a late shift this week so cycled with son to school this morning, it was like an ice rink but we all stayed upright (and I was a bit uptight!). Its getting cold and icy again now. I can't see me commuting by bike until it drys up and danger of ice is over. My thigh still hurts after Fridays off.

I'm quite proud that I fronted my fear and did a commute in
the ice today. I hadn't been on the bike for nearly 2 weeks but felt like a tw*t telling anyone that it was because I was bothered about the ice.

Don't know if I would have been so puffed out if I'd have come off again.

Sometimes it's not worth it.

Wet can be salted or not...not getting into it matey, you obviously should be on the pro peloton or cross circuit due to your skills.....

I ride flat out, ice stops that...I don't ride.... you also forget many of the folk on here have a serious amount of experience....not just riding to work....some of us have been/are serious hard core racers off/on road...etc....

You are just being an ar$e - yep allowed on a forum, but doesn't contribute to a 'general thread'.........

If you want to be an 'ass' go in to politics..(on this forum and in the real world) that's where they all live...

Ok, after reading all of these letters from experienced cyclists, I'll admit that I'm just a fat old fart who mainly only commutes. But, I continue to commute on the ice with no problems. I thought most commuters were really into safety, with all the talk of helmets, hi-viz, lights, etc. WHY, oh, WHY won't you people try studded tyres? I've mentioned this before, and was basically blown off because, "our weather isn't as bad as yours", yet here are 6+ pages of letters from people falling on ice! I'm too old to risk the injuries that some of you are willing to take. I have my studded tyres mounted on a spare set of rims. It takes less than 5 minutes to put them on if things look icy in the morning, and I've had them on and off on an almost daily basis for the last 2 weeks. Today was nice, so I used my slicks, but it rained all afternoon and evening, and is supposed to get below freezing, tonight. I'll probably head out to the garage in the morning and put them back on for the morning commute. I'd still rather ride slower, than drive a car.

My philosophy is, "if you don't want to ride safely, then don't ride." (Biting my tongue, because I'd LIKE to use a little stronger language).

pant...pant....ok....calmed down, now. OK, this is the last I'll say on this subject for awhile. But, PLEASE be careful, Folks.
