  • They were targeting an alleged doping network during World Championships
  • In total nine people were arrested as part of 16 raids in Austria and Germany
  • One of the people held was Mark Schmidt, a doctor who worked for the Gerolsteiner cycling team around the time of the 2008 Tour de France

Is getting your own blood back classed as illegal?

What's the benefit? Sorry for being dim, is it to dilute drugs already taken or to increase the red cells just prior to a race?

Ask Lance.
You basically get to replace your tired blood with lovely clean fresh fully oxygenated blood.
It's more so you have more red blood cells to transport oxygen - they get most of the plasma out IIRC. The downside is that your blood then becomes thicker (so making it harder work for your heart), and any naughty stuff you took just before you gave the blood is still present when you get it back, so you need to be even more careful with doping. Plus you need to be sure that it's you're own blood you get back.
I'm looking at you, Tyler Hamilton.
