I am a know-nothing about PC's but my newly refurbished Dell laptop opens a Windows Media page with lots of blue screen and options for DVD,News etc when I click on the email attachment. What's occurring, as they say?

No idea.
But unless you know who the email is from and more importantly EXACTLY what the attachment is don't open it.

sure it's a .doc file? Do you have Microsoft Office installed? Or OpenOffice?

if you don't have MS Office or OpenOffice it might be getting confused about what program to use when opening the file; but I've never seen that (windows media) happen before.

I think I have Microsoft Office (), it's a .doc file and I do know what it is. It's a simple form

bad idea to rename file extensions!

word 97 is old but MS is supposed to be backward compatible.

Have you tried saving the attachment somewhere and then actually opening word and telling it to open the file?

.docx is the new word 2007 format so renaming a previous word version file (.doc) probably won't work. i would save the file to your desktop, then use microsoft word or openoffice to open it.

Hmmm, thanks, I've opened it by saving it and then when right-clicking it has Windows Media as the default prog. I think I have changed that by 'browsing' and selecting Word.

Yip, that should do it! wonder how that happened....
Might have done it for the rest of your office apps too; if you open 'my computer' or 'windows explorer' and select 'tools' -> 'folder options' & then click on 'file types' (give your computer a minute or two here, this always takes ages) it'll show all the file types it knows about and what program it will use to open them with (you can also then check that .doc is still associated with word or if it still thinks that windows media can do it!).

That's Windows XP anyway, I've avoided anything later than that so far.
