I've recently switched to Plusnet from Orange, and think it's splendid. Before, I had to threaten to take Orange to court for tricking me into signing a new contract then saying they'd send the new router to my old landlady (who I left on very acrimonious terms with).
You can get a rolling 30 day contract, so you aren't tied in. So what is there to lose? I think the biggest problem is when you're tied to one of them for one or more years.
