I shall be back in jolly old Blighty this time tomorrow for the first time in 3 years, and the first time in 18 years without the wife (or kids). I'm very excited!

Sorry, know this is off topic, but just can't contain myself...... No commuting as obviously not going to work, but going for a tour of the Yorkshire Dales, weather permitting (ha, ha, no jokes please).

You are excited to come back here?

I'd love to get out to tell you the truth.

Yep. A few ferrets, whippets and a pint of John Smiths will bring you back down to earth.

But at least it won't be the Stepford Wives existence you have now.

I know things aren't perfect in the UK, but until you live away from the UK, you don't quite realize how many things are right in the UK, and how differently things can be elsewhere. Again, not saying there aren't warts, but the UK has many things it can be proud of -and I mean that seriously!

I live in a country where it's not uncommon for someone who's never left the country, to proudly proclaim it's the best in the world. Several times over, and very, very loudly too.

When I had a girlfriend: young, svelte, loads of hair on head, rugged in a Brad Pitt sort of way (well, OK, the last one is a very untruthful).

Now: overweight, balding, grey hair, wears slippers, complains about youth of today and neighbourhood ("it were all fields it were.....") and has looks of a female East German athlete after a bad night out (thankfully then I still look macho).

Hmmm, don't think I have a chance. I'll stick to a night out with a canoe, some old mates and some whippet racing after 12 pints of John Smith.

Sheffield originally. I'm hoping to get back to Sheffield to take a look around to see how it's changed. Last time I was in the city centre must have been about 30 years ago! I know the Tinsley salt and pepper pots were demolished recently.

<old curmudgeon alert>It's very surprizing when you haven't been somewhere how much can change even in just a year -last time I was in Sheffield, it were all fields, it were, and young 'uns didn't give no trouble and you could go t'pub and still get change owt of threpence.</old curmudgeon alert>

Yo! Sheffielder! Be prepared for some massive shocks - the city centre will be unrecognisable to you (peace gardens gone, no hole-in-the-road, midland station make-over, pond street, etc, etc).

Oh my god, a blast from the past. I remember going in there with my grandparents! It was *the* toy shop for kids back then. Or what about Beatties?
