ouch!

out with the club today, 5 miles from home (with some uphill bits to go) and i get a painful sensation in my right knee, akin to it being squeezed from either side. was ok for flat (cycling seemed ok as left leg was doing the work), but it became murder on the uphill sections, slowing progress to single digits (in kms!).

knee is not swolen, and has responded well to deep heat, bath and cold shower (just on my legs).

anyone know what causes this or had it themselves?

Yep i suffer from that too, usually sets in after about 40mls and strangely enough get the pain in my right knee aswell. I put it down to wear and tear or in my case getting old 50+yrs but no idea what really causes it.

Yeah i sometimes get it, but only when I actually do squeeze my knee from either side.

well it's not being 50+ then as i have a decade and more to go before i reach that milestone. and i think bonj has even longer.
