Those posts look perfect for little scroats to tag.

What's on the other side, something that needs protecting from rabbits?

I see the point of the fence then, it may be ugly but they have to be seen to be keeping children out.
When I was in Switzerland years ago I noticed they seemed to have to do a lot less to keep people out. And I grew up next to a railway line and there is still a hole in the hedge at the bottom of my parents garden - Dad used it to go to the other side to cut the hedge.

The UK rail service is obsessive about fencing.

The majority of railtrack that I've been next to throughout Europe and the USA has been unfenced. Seems like folk there don't need to kept off the tracks.
I think it is less the UK rail service and more our media that launches into campaigns to protect idiots from being idiots. Consider the demands to close level crossings. FFS, if people are that stupid....

And it is because of the whole compensation culture we have now. People are terrified of being sued now.

I do believe that the law say that railway companies must install a fence to prevent the public from having free access. Owing to bored teenagers and drunks taking a short cut home the simple five strand wire or chain link fence has become a thing of the past. Don't worry Satnav once the Bindweed has grown over it you won't notice it.

Yes but at one time the railways did used to get sued a lot by the families of idiots (or the idiot himself) after some sort of accident, so, with that in mind, and the rise of the Health and F*cking Safety Exectutive, things were changed. Unfortunately, it has now created a climate where people are afraid of their own shadow.
