Well as I said, when i visited mates in Leeds, Sheff, Newcastle, Manchester none of them were working, neither were any of their housemates. I know few people at my Uni who works during term time either.

Well, here you go. Believe it or not, a lot of students are working.

It was fairly common where I was. A lot were normally arts and social science students who had 6-8hrs of contact time a week and large blocks e.g. all wednesday + 1 other day off. There were smaller numbers but still there for things like CS and Biochemistry.

Doesn't quite correlate with your earlier figures of up to 70% working during term time. I'd also be interested in who they were asking, I certainly wasn't! I can only speak from my personal experience. Just about everyone I know works during holidays, just not term time.

I'm not sure where you get that from, it's at least 50%. I think I read recently that it's more like 70%, but at the moment I can only find articles from 2007-8 and they're hovering around the 50% figure.

That's what I said, so it does correlate with my earlier statement that I could only find earlier articles quoting the rate at about 50%. I'm not sure why you're trying to paint me as a liar when I clearly said that I could only find evidence at around the 50% mark, and that's exactly what I just produced.

What?? I'm not trying to 'paint' you as a liar, very confused about that one, think you're taking this discussion a bit too seriously. From my experience few people work during term time, thats the end of it. Chill.

Those are the lucky ones, as I said earlier, my loans don't cover my fees or accomodation, which pretty much forces me to look to the parents for a bit of financial help

just wondering what you mean by 'fees'? I thought that everyone could claim for the full amount to pay tuition fees?

I didn't have a job last year but I'm hoping to find one this year, so that I can afford a second road bike and to accrue some savings- probably in that order

eh! Now you tell me! I'm just about to go down to the university with a cheque. Would you care to expand on this?

well, you still have to pay it all back eventually, but i think the tuition fee loan is available to everyone. but if you can afford to pay it year by year up front as it were then you avoid £10,000 debt at the end of the course...

Well I'm currently at Uni and I know few people who work during term time, it's not common from my experiences.

It's my experience too, most students don't work.

I tried to get a job in a bike shop, but there were none available, and I wasn't that desperate for a job, so I didn't bother working.

Didn't get a grant so my father would have paid for everything, in theory. He then made me repay it in full over the first five years at work. Essex County Council also came back after the first year and said they wouldn't meet the fees, so I paid them in instalments over a very long time. Crazy really, they were prepared to pay my tuition fees for a four year Accountancy & Finance degree course but weren't happy that I switched to a one year Foundation Course in Accountancy with a guaranteed training contract at the end, subject to results. Fortunately I got an exceptional grade - I spent the year working hard whilst a lot on the first year of the degree course were on the piss. I really wanted to go into the second year of the degree course as this was on offer, but my parents couldn't/wouldn't fund it.
