I just baked some bread and the recipe said 220 in a conventional oven and 200 in a fan assisted.

My mum was a Belfast Irish and brought us up to say oven with a 'o' as in hot. It took me years to start saying uven 'properly.

And to think that I always blamed the troubles on the fact that country and western is popular in NI!!!

I doubt if the temperature in the oven is actually accurate as it is a fairly crude and cheap thermo switch. So one oven may be different to another set to the same temperature.

From experience a fan oven heats up a ready made frozen whatever quicker but when I reduce the temp on proper baking it seems to take a bit longer but I chicken out of putting it on the convetional oven recommended temp.

You need lots and lots of tests with home made rice pudding!

I hate fan ovens! I've got one, been in the house since it was built. You can see I don't replace things for the sake of things. House built early 80s! I always burnt pizzas around edges whilst middle was uncooked.

I bought a little gadget called a Remoska, which is a pan with a heating element in the lid and it does everything that the oven can do, bake, roast etc. You can slow it down a little by fitting a foil lid over food if you want slower cooking. It is a device from Czechoslovakia which was introduced to this country a few years ago. They are selling well at Lakeland.

I bake cakes and cook all those little things that are so wasteful in an oven. Only use the oven for bigger things.

I get around that by hanging an oven thermometer from the rack thing and you just peep through the glass door and keep an eye on the temperature.

My oven thermostat and my oven thermometer are as one in the matter of the oven's temperature. Prob. more by luck than judgement.
