We had this discussion about work, but it is the same principle. We found that we were pandering to people's complaints far too much (not public facing or customer service related), thus giving out the impression that people are justified in complaining and then expect something to be done about it. This seems to have become the norm across the board, now we're seeing it on TV as you've correctly pointed out.

IMO it does nothing to empower and strengthen a nation. It is almost as bad as serving up someone a free lunch and apologising in advance that the Broccoli isn't as hot as it could be.

I haven't watched a soap for 20 years or so, but having accidentally seen snippets of Hollyoaks, Eastenders etc it strikes me that entertainment now is confined to loss, depression, anger, cheating and lying. But hey, if that's what draws the viewers then they must continue with their business model. Sadly this sort of storyline must reflect real life, albeit in a compressed and caricatured way.

Surely before every episode of Eastenders they need the warning:

'The following programme contains scenes of people scowling, arguing, and generally being miserable which may lead some viewers to wonder what's the point'

@TVC

But that's no problem whatsoever - there'll be a helpline announcement at the end of the episode to help all of those affected. :smile:

Just flicked on the TV. Emmerdale was about to begin, but not before the announcer gave a dire warning that tonights episode contains "threat and menace".

Now, we're use to warnings about sex and violence, and consequently anything too sexy, violenty or sweary tends to get consigned to the post watershed period. Fair enough.

But warning us about threat and menace? Are there people out there really that sensitive? Where does this end? Will there be warnings for vegetarians that tonights episode contains images of someone eating a corned beef sandwich? A warning for patriots that in tonights Corrie Ken Barlow is seen driving a Korean car?

Are these warnings now getting a bit silly?

I must admit that in my youth the "the following program contains scenes of a sexual nature" warning was the prime decider of my viewing for the evening. :shy:
