I caught a very trendy fella on a single speed (not fixed) road bike tonight - going up hill...... Let on to him - "All Right....." "Not fair you've got gears" he said... Me...."Your bike is much lighter than mine" - "Fair enough" he replied.

Got chatting - "What's with the flower in your helmet" - "Oh it makes me happy" he said...... "Yep you need it with traffic like this...."

Had a good chat in the traffic - his Bob Jackson was in for repairs, and was on his old bike.... very trendy fella, baggies, pinkish top, pink sunnies, pink woolie gloves and a flower in his crash hat...... think he was either an Auzie or from NZ.....really nice bloke...probably in the 'fixie' scene - bit ususal up 'ere in Sth Manchester.....

I'm rarely overtaken on my route in and out of work but occassionally I get done if I go for a long one after work- my justification is always that I've got panniers on. Although one guy sailed past with a cheery 'alright mate' one day. He was doing well in excess of 25mph. It was only as I watched him slide effortlessly into the difference that I realised it was the thoroughly nice bloke who takes me (and everyone else) to the absolute limit on the chainy.

Had some health problems earlier this year. For three months I had to limit myself to a maximum speed of 15mph and keep my average down below 12mph. The most difficult part was watching other cyclist, who I would normally over take, sail past and not respond to it. That almost had me chewing on the handlebars in frustration. Tis nice now to be able to steam round almost at full tilt.

I got overtaken by a lad on a Tourer/Audax type thing, he didnt blast past, but past he went, I started making my excuses to myself and then just thought, so what, he was faster, I have only been at it a few months and am still overweight, progress has been made but not quite enough to keep up with people with aero bars and serious thighs

I was doing 18 mph when he went past.

Yeah sorry about that but Eastenders was on.

I feel your pain!

Every now and then after a particularly hard day, followed by a couple of recuperative pints, I set off feeling like crap and thinking 'ok, let's try and make like a grown up tonight, and if someone overtakes, let them.' And then someone does, and it's 'wise guy, huh?', and off we go...

I CAN'T HELP MYSELF DOCTOR!

It looks like a distended spin-off of the old "competitive commuting" thread on C+.

I've only ever been overtaken once, embarrassingly some chav wearing an Adidas tracksuit on an mtb caught me napping accelerating from some lights, and then kept up a fairly impressive for nobblies 20mph on the flat.

Obviously I wasn't having that so wound my Allez up to 25 and tried my best to look like I wasn't trying.;) ;)

I must admit that seeing other cyclists is *bad* for recovery rides. I turn into Mr. Hyde and think "must overtake cyclist".

I don't have a problem being overtaken but sometimes I then want to try and keep up ... can't always. I actually have a bit more of a problem overtaking ... I feel like I'm showing off... but equally hate being stuck behind someone going slower (grannies and the unfit), especially on a hill if I'm forced to loose valuable momentum. I never know whether to acknowledge the person I'm overtaking:blush:.

I get this on club runs, where slower people in front of me are making me loose my momentum. I simple pull out and go past them, and nine times out of ten the person thanks me for it because he/she knows that he/she is holding up the group.
