Overtaking etiquette

There's a lot more fair weather cyclists on the road who've not got the Winter miles.

What are the rules for overtaking slower cyclists. I mean, if you get a female or an older gentleman, do you fire past and demoralise them or do you sit back and hope they turn off thus avoiding them the embarrassment?

Is chivalry or respect for elders still applicable on the road?

Fire past at Warp 9 whilst whistling a tune..... totally devastate them......

I must admit sometimes I like to sit back and relax and fly past them as if no effort was involved Its especially pleasing when you do that to somebody on an expensive bike and you're on a hack.

Got stuck behind a lady earlier in the week. She was working pretty hard and I didn't want to demoralise her by flying past. I ended up trailing her for a mile and half before she turned off. I lost a couple of minutes, but it was worth it for the embarrassment I saved her.

as someone who is more often an overtakee i wish people would make it stick - a lot of cylists seem to come charging past (often at a place that it not appropriate) and then immeditely slow down which means that i either have to slow myself or overtake them - normaly ends up that I have to speed up to lose them

Having been warped (warpee) and warped a few (warper), I still think it's nice to utter a 'good evening' or 'goodmorning' at the point of passing.

I'm a fan of calling out before overtaking. It does surprise some folk on occasion, but then so does quiet overtaking.

Depends on whether she was waiting for you to pass so that she could relax back to her less effort speed - I have done that and then huffing and panting thought "Why doesn't the idiot just pass me".
