Overtaking etiquette

Free-wheel past. Its the only way. Even when going up-hill. If you can't free-wheel past, then don't bother trying to overtake.

If i was to freewheel past someone on my commuter Trek 1.7 with a Fulcrum 7 Wheelset they would probably think it was the 16.05 Oxford to London train coming up behind them the amount of noise I make when freewheeling

I must admit sometimes I like to sit back and relax and fly past them as if no effort was involved Its especially pleasing when you do that to somebody on an expensive bike and you're on a hack.

Sunday before last, unusually riding my hybrid, I was overtaken by stern faced, silent roadies on the approach to Sawyers Hiill and later Dark Hill in Richmond Park. With great pleasure I scalped them both on the hills. I did quietly say "good morning" as I went past. End of brag.

I have never been surprised by overtakers; there is usually enough road noise or sometimes heavy breathing to forewarn; I am never offended by a "good morning" as they go by and if it is a steep hill I sometimes have the strength to shout "Bravo".

Go past as fast as you can, hiding your rapid pulse, laboured breathing and lactating muscles, "Shock and Awe" they call it, like the bloke on Chelford Road on the Cannondale who must be getting pissed off with seemingly effortlesly gliding past, it isnt effortless mate and your out of the saddle last ditch attempt to avoid scalping only spurs me on.

I overtook an MTB today on my 'bent... first scalp so I guess my leg muscles are getting better. I think I remember calling hello up to the dizzy heights of the rider on the upwrong but who knows?

Usually if I am being followed I just slow down and keep slowing down until the tailgater skips past (unless I am going at a reasonable speed and don't mind a drafter; I can be generous sometimes even though I am usually too slow to draft anyone) I don't mind being dropped at all and would rather be scalped than have to think about someone immediately behind me itching to get past.

and I bet you didn't know that you live on the south coast as well as in Chester/Brizzle!

The thing that annoys me with the FCN calculator is the most appropriate option for baggage is nothing but I always have my jersey pockets stuffed full, use a frame bag & a large saddle bag on top of that. In terms of volume I'm close to carrying a small rucksack. I don't want to wear a ruck sack/messenger bag to carry things on my back so I don't have pain across my shoulders/lower back.

Whoever designed the calculator seem to think that everyone cycles around at 30mph naked as to not be disgraced by wearing inappropriate gear

I say Hi, Morning, Evening, whatever fits. Keep it all friendly.

But I don't see a problem overtaking. Or being overtaken. We all ride at different speeds for different reasons. I like seeing more people riding on the road.

I always feel like a bit of a idiot when I say hi or gesture to an on coming rider and they totally ignore you. Most don't mind and a quick nod is always friendly and nice.

Admitedly nothing to do with this thread but I was out for a little ride yesterday and I encountered a guy on a high bike going the other way - his friendly greeting was going to be acknoledged come what may. No problem for me but amused me a little.
