Overtaking shenanigans

I'm a bit surprised at Col's "wait in line" comment. I'd say that's a tad hypocritical at best, given how submissively he claims to ride. By his own logic, how can he dare to take space from a car driver on the road/get in other drivers' way?

Well yes, to your or my logic. To Col though, that would be a dangerous and bad cyclist, because Col would be frustrating the driver behind him. Far better for Col to pull left submissively and stay out of the way of his betters.

Actually this reminds me of one of the youtube comments I have received (not sure which video). Someone claimed that it was cyclists like me, being on the roads at the rush hours, that was causing all of the congestion. Classic!

Most of the overtaking I do of motor vehicles occurs when the they are either slow moving or stationary. Because of the reduced speed the risk is far less, there is no law that says I cannot undertake slow moving or stationary traffic.

Nothing to do with hypocrisy, it's making progress, it's good road sense and I'm sure it is one of the main reasons why we all commute by bike through congested areas.

Heh heh. It's like the motorists who claim buses cause congestion. Hmmmm... a bus with 80 people on board, or a line of 80 cars with one occupant. Which would be take up more room on the road ?

But wouldn't the cars all be going really really fast if the bus weren't slowing them down?

Well, that seems to be their assumption, forgetting about such silly little things as traffic lights, speed limits and the like.

They do this all the time up here, it's normal driving apparently.

I'm sure I remember reading a study that found cyclists actually speed up traffic, on average. Sure, they slow down the peak speeds, but because everyone now travel at a more steady pace, the roads can sustain more traffic and flow more smoothly.

If I was to overtake a car doing a reasonable speed I would do it when there is enough space. If the cars are stationary I'll give the space of the door and pay attention to if they're moving out of lane/start to indicate etc.

A bike is easier to judge the size of than a car. Cars also don't need to swerve for pot holes and things, but may choose to. In slow traffic you'll be able to see them come out of lane and warn them/stop overtaking.

As long as you keep to the speed of the traffic around you and be aware unlike Dave ''the camera'' Magnatom you should not have any problems.

Doh! I'm not arguing with what you think, I'm sure we both agree that your example is absolutely fine and correct riding.

Instead I'm applying Col's rather odd form of logic to this sort of situation. It's Col who says that this sort of riding causes problems, and I'm pointing out the hypocrisy of him saying he "waits in the queue". Can't really see you waiting in the queue on your bike, right?

It's alright for drivers to expect us to be on the left and overtake us just before the traffic queue but it's not alright for us to keep on going once the driver who's overtaken us has stopped. Make's sense to me.
