I got a scalp recently. Saw a distant cyclist labouring up the hill ahead and judged I was closing. Set about the task and caught up before the top. Paused to gather a bit of strength to make the pass before pressing on by...
an old lady in full lycra gear,
and woolly bobble hat.
On the drops.
Oh dear.

I enjoy nothing more than overtaking RLJs

I overtook someone on a suspended MTB with whopping gurt headphones last night. He was bouncing along the road like he was on a pogo stick and immersed in his tunes. Although cars were overtaking him too, he seemed a bit surprised when I whizzed past. At least he was having an enjoyable ride.

Nothing feels better when you realise the cyclist you spot on the horizon is there for the taking "SCALP:hyper: " and as you eat the road up behind them they know nothing of your presence until you pass and offer a smug satisfying greeting,or is that just me:biggrin:

How do you deal with being scalped tho? I rarely get passed... but if I'm on an easy ride trying to keep the HR low I may be done over ;-) At that point all thoughts of the steady ride evaporate and I jump on the wheel if I'm able.
Anyone else unable to resist this? :-)
Happened a couple of days ago and I was thankful I was able to turn off for home, no way could I hang on to this guy for long!

I had a cyclist draft me a whole 4 miles recently. I had passed him as he was on the pavement, but he must have dropped onto the road as when i shoulder checked, I could see him there.
He was on a MTB and not wearing a helmet (if that has anything to do with it). I was managing 20mph when he first got on my tail but it dropped to about 18mph when he started to lose ground. At the next cross roads (4 miles) I shoulder checked and he was no longer there so must have turned left.

I have had a few cyclists on my tail and I have been on the tail of a few roadies as well, we always seperate and dont see each other for much longer though.

I get passed all the time when the roadies come out in summer, because I'm a slow steady commuter, on a touring bike, with panniers, wearing office clothes. When some Lycra-clad youngster on a carbon bike with two spokes per wheel zooms past me, I simply say to myself "and where were you last winter when it was raining and snowing? You may be faster but you're not a proper cyclist..."

Unfortunately, that doesn't work when a seventy year old chap with black cotton duck saddleback and fixed wheel overtakes me in the winter.

You probably need to shoulder check more often than every 4 miles!
