The OEDs word of the year 2013 is 'selfy', and their researchers have traced it back to 2002....

....er, selfy, to describe a photo of oneself, taken by oneself has been used since the early nineties, as far as I know. I first heard the term 'selfy' or rather its plural 'selfies' used to describe scenes in the film European Vacation... in fact, it'll be '94 i first heard the word used because it was my girlfriend at the time that used it.

The OEDs definition is "a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website"

sorry grammar bods, but it pre-dates smartphones, webcams and social media websites considerably.... so you can scrub the last bit.

I've always preferred the personalised dictionary anyway, but can only ever find it with the name 'collin' and never 'monty'

That's pretty much true for current usage though - and they only say 'typically', so it doesn't absolutely exclude other types.

You could always email them and point that out. They do their research but are not infallible, and I'm sure they'd be pleased to have any extra evidence they've missed.
