They do - even though they're a collegiate bunch at heart. But we're in the cafe at the moment.

Incidentally, is it just me, or does this thread suggest that a rather higher-than-expected proportion of us are Oxford graduates?

Errm, don't the stats say cyclists are disproportionately successful, middle class professionals and that (Oxbridge) graduates are likely to be successful, middle class professionals... therefore one might expect a cycling group to have a higher proportion of (Oxbridge) graduates...

It's a bit more complicated than that...
Ah, but I'd observed that the Oxford graduates are disproportionately amongst the P&L visitors to Cafe ...
What was that I said about an argumentative streak?

My perception is that even if you allow for that, and for the fact that Oxford is a very cycle-friendly university, there are still more than I'd expect. I can't be bothered to dig out the stats, though.

My whole life boils down to this one pun. I feel enlightened.

Sorry, I'd left a critical "n't" off my question to FF! I thought he'd missed the point...

Back to the girl - I think her "joke letter" was a massive own goal.

She felt everyone was taking the interviews at Oxford too seriously - and criticised that.

I interview a lot of people often. If people are not serious about the application, they aren't going to be considered.

I suspect, to be kind to her, she thought it would be a laugh, maybe after a few drinks.

Sadly, to an employer, she looks unemployable. (Why take someone who finds interviewies at one of the worlds best University too serious??). If she wasn't serious then I wouldn't trust her again.

BTW - there seems to be a lot of people having a pop at Cambridge on this thread

As a state educated student in the '80s I found Cambridge exceptional - and it does tend to be seen as the best university in the world rather often

I'm fascinated by this. Any particular reason? I am looking for logical reasons as to why someone would think this. The most likely explanation I came to was more general to this thread, that is was like other things on here and just being indignant. Saying something like to an employer she looks unemployable rings alarm bells to me that it is out of a kind of petty personal retribution for hurting one's feelings about something one believes in. Well yes, we're all guilty of that sometimes, but to deny someone a job? Surely that doesn't actually make you any better than the things you are accusing her of?

In my experience, of all the apprentices I've had, it's the rude, gobby, self-opinionated teenagers that are rubbish at the job and you can't trust them. The quiet, polite and agreeable ones are without exception, the best. These kids I see might be different to high-flying prospective top Uni teenagers like this girl but I've got a daughter a bit younger and a bit older than this girl and I'd be terribly embarrassed and upset if they showed this amount disrespect and rudeness. As far as being employable goes, if she publicly bad mouths an establishment after just one short experience, you might be worried about giving her a job in your establishment. I've never been to Uni, but my daughter has and if she ever behaved like this girl she'd know about it from me.
