What she didn't think through was that in the future every potential employer will be typing her name into a search engine and coming up with that story.
Maybe she wants to be a journalist, in which case she'll probably already have had several offers.

She should have been hoping for an offer and then accepting it. MIssed opportunities IMO.

I had offers from Imperial, Brunel, Cambridge, and Middlesex. My folks pursuaded me to go for Middlesex so I could live at home. I should have gone to Imperial or Brunel to study Mechanical Engineering.

One of my criteria for choosing a uni is that it should be as far away from my parents as humanly possible. I did pretty well on that front, but pretty poorly in other areas!

Oxford's a great university. Magadalen is a decent college.

...and so is Hertford College.

Imperial and Brunel were the best places to get offers from, at the time, for Mech Eng and I really wanted one or the other so getting both offers was fantastic. Then I got offers through clearing for Middlesex, Cambridge, Woolwich, and some others. Cambridge would have been fun just for the atmosphere and kudos but my folks really pressured me into taking Middlesex as it was the closest and meant I wouldn't have to rent digs and associate with people who drink and have a good time. Also Cambridge wasn't offering the Mech Eng, can't remember what it was but it wasn't for me.
I think the problem was that my brother, previously, had moved to Coventry to do Electrical Eng and our folks only saw him when he needed laundry doing. And that's the way it should be really.
