However, further down the page Cycle Magazine claim to have defeated 'Gold' rated locks in 10 seconds.
I'd suggest that how you lock it, and where you leave it are at least as important. In particular, don't lock it in a way that makes it easy to insert a bottle jack.

If you are relying on a chain then it needs to be at least 16mm diameter certainly not 8mm.
The problem being that 16mm chains are very heavy and not really practical to carry around.
My Almax chain weighs a good few Kgs, I think 6Kg at least.
do you chain it to your bike when you ride or carry it in a bag?
I never carry them with me, they are just too heavy, I actually have two one at home and one at work.

I wouldn't carry a chain. The one I used to use at work with a d lock weighed in at over 5kg's - I took it to work in the car. No way would you want that weight on the bike flapping about.

As I said, it's not just what lock, it's how you lock it, where you lock it, and how often.
If you use a D lock, try to lock it in a way that prevents a bottle jack from being inserted.
Lock it in a busy, well-lit area where thieves can't work undisturbed under cover of darkness.
If you lock it everyday in the same place for the same hours, the risk is higher that someone will spot it day after day and then plan their attack. In this case you need to spend more on locks and choose location more carefully than if you were making a one-off visit.
