Paid to ride

A bit anyway. The allowance for not having a parking permit* where I work is going up to £2 / day.

The pound I currently get already pays for my tyres and chains.

*a plastic thingy that you show at the security gate if you arrive by car. Not required for car sharers, pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclist. The increase is due to having to stuff more workers on one site.

Doubt whether the proportion of staff cycling will change, but it might encourage a little more car-sharing. I'm not expecting much.

They've got it the wrong way round, they should just charge drivers to park. That would reduce the useage much quicker.

I get charged for Cycle Parking at work!!!!!

However the £1 per month does get me a proper locker that secures the bike, so I don't mind paying

We charge staff to park, it's not massive, about £15 a month (depends upon salary) but many take to parking on side streets. That's not going to be possible when we move in July, which is why we have a record number of retirements at the minute. It's forcing some folk to thinking about driving part way and cycling the rest.

For me it's not much change, and a 'hope' for better facilities, but I won't have a back up plan to take the car, as I really won't be able to park it anywhere. Not that I use my backup much, if at all.

The good thing is that £2/ day will pretty much cover the monthly bus passes for a couple of my colleagues- there's an online purchase discount plus an organisation that is trying to improve take-up of active travel and public transport offers an additional discount for bus travel to the industrial area.

Actually it'd cover my bus pass too! I can stop busting my ass on that goddamned bike!

It's going to be difficult. The particular problem is that where the site is now many people commute from >10 miles north or north east of the site due to property prices (I live south of the site and have a small flat). The staff who are moving to our site are moving from another site further north, so their commutes are likely to be pretty long unless they move.

My place does the same, albeit only £1/day still. Although added to that contractors are charged to pay, some of those who are permanent and don't drive have sold their parking "privilege" to those contractors around £30 or so a month.

its a good idea though. I wont go into the specifics, but at our new site there is a multi story car park. The cost per space was something running into 5 figures each, but they only gave cyclists parking 3 car widths within a cage. Given we try to be very green, but budgets affect this, what started out as a 'hub' - park bikes, have showers and changing where the bikes are, and lockers, was very quickly down graded to a cage within the car park. We then have a few hundred yards to walk before we 'hope' to be able to get to showers. No sign of lockers, so my kit will be dried under my desk in an open plan office, with the assistance of a barrage of USB fans I will rig up.

Ah well.
