There I was, happily cycling to work on Thursday. On my way round a two lane roundabout when some genius decides that he wants to get out the exit I'm cycling past from the inside lane of the RAB.

MY concentration at the time was on the people coming up to enter the RAB when the idiot comes across the front of me and smacks my hand with the rear left corner of his van. As a result the bars are swept out from under me and I end up going down fairly hard onto my right shoulder.

Looked up thinking surely he'll stop, as it was he was slowing for a redlight when he obviously saw me in the road as he dropped a gear and sped off through the lights  All too quick for me to get a plate number and the witnesses were all concentrating of me on the floor. Thank you to those that stopped and helped me up by the way.

Came out quite lucky though, bruised and road rashed shoulder and a scraped up hand were my injuries and as for the bike, well my body saved it from any damage

Very shaken up, didn't call the police there and then but carried on to work and then went home at lunch time as shoudler had started getting painful and went and reported it, not a lot they can do without witness details or a registration though.

Not sure what the point of my ramblings are, except don't just look for the more obvious risks on RABs and if you're cycling in Eastbourne keep clear of blue transit vans with a grey/silver flatbed back end :?:

Think I'll be buying a helmet cam very soon!

nasty. I've had similar. I hope the driver gets galloping pox. Glad you're ok.

Cheers.

Will fetch the bike from work Monday and give it a proper check over, then ride again Tuesday, not going to let the numpty put me off riding. Was very nervous the rest of the way to work on Thursday though, very tense everytime I heard something approaching me.

Am sure the confidence will come back though.

Oooh, glad you're OK. If it were me, I'd stake out that roundabout with a video camera at about the same time for a couple of days, you might see the truck again.

I'd be reporting that and asking the police... hay, insisting they follow it up by looking at CCTV as the driver was obviously uninsured, was involved in a hit and run, and left the scene of an accident... he shouldn't be on the road.

Glad to hear you're basically okay though!

I'll second this; fairly distinctive vehicle, should have scrapes on it too to aid in its ID - give the fuzz a call!

not an accident you can do a great deal about by the sounds of it although perhaps youcould have been in the inner lane if that wasn't your exit? On any roundabout i think lane discipline is very important

anyhow, anything you walk away from ...

Video camera, full time, when cycling. (preferably 2).

If every cyclist had a helmet cam and rear cam, our safety would increase dramatically. You may say it's 'too much'. Well, this is the world we live in. Otherwise you end up as you did, no witnesses, no license plate, no nothing.

I did end up reporting it that afternoon just not from the scene, not sure if there's any CTTV there though, will check it out next time I cycle to work (should be Tuesday).

As for scrapes on the van, well my hands were in the drops so he hit my hands rather than the bars so think he got away ok.

And Tynan, I hear what you're saying about the lanes but the exit I was going to take is a dual carriageway so if I take the inside on the RAB I end up stuck in the outside lane on the dual, which is why I started taking the outside lane on the RAB.

local knowledge always wins natch but I take roundabouts like i was in a car

I wouldn't be happy to pass a roundabout exit in the outside lane
