Bought a new trek frame, a 920 for touring. After one tour quite a few chips. Worst bike for paint i ever had, her Giant is perfect and our old Cannondale headshok touring bikes have scrapes but do

not chip. Going to have it sand blasted and painted next winter by a good auto repair place . Tell us about paint issues on other makes.

My 2012 Genesis equilibrium is a bit chipped but it’s done about 11000 miles, and I leave it locked up out and about

Dawes call the paint on my Horizon 'Ardaznailz', and after 22 years and 47,000 miles, it's still in pretty much showroom condition, the only chips are where the chain flicks the chainstay. I'd be tempted to dispute the Ardaznailz label though, I think the reason it's survived so well is that it's tough and flexible rather than hard. At one time I had lighting cables on it, and when I took them off you could feel a slight impression that had been pressed into the paint by the Ty-Raps. The same when I removed the front mech: when I refitted it I was able to slot it back into the groove that the clamp had pressed into the paint.

I'm quite precious about it though, I've never parked it in a way that involves anything (such as a Sheffield stand) touching the paint, and I'm pretty careful to avoid places where someone else is likely to throw a bike on top of it, too. I'll happily walk a hundred yards to find somewhere better to leave it than a bike parking area.

My previous bike is a matt/satin black Raleigh Record, and that's a different kettle of fish entirely. It's not chipped, but the problem with matt paint is that it's porous, so the damp permeates the paint and it ends up covered with rust rash even without any chips. (A bit like chrome, which also corrodes because it's porous.)

My wife has a nearly new Matt Black hybrid, that’s got a slight Satin sheen to it. As with most things on ‘vehicles’ - anything too flash / glitzy looking - is often quite delicate and not overly hardy !

Normally if powder- coating car wheels etc - if you’re looking for a Satin / Matt finish; that would be achieved with the appropriate lacquer ontop of the paint.

I’m not sure this frame isn’t ‘just’ paint - with no lacquer protection therefore.

Once it’s really bad / chipped - I’ll get it redone in a solid colour with gloss lacquer.

The paint on my Spa seems tough and has a lovely finish; the aluminium Orro was similar.

The expensive respray of my Marin in 2019 has been very disappointing- the slightest touch takes off a little flake of the topcoat, but leaves an undercoat. I just dab on a bit of nail varnish each time, but I will strip the bike and get it resprayed again this winter.

Oh no. Was this from a renowned / specialist cycle frame finisher or ?

I have a Matt Black bike. I've never been a fan of Matt finishes on Bikes or Cars. Over the years it has gone shiny at all the contact points or places it gets rubbed or polished by contact with clothes or bits and bobs.

Black is alway a soft paint but this hasn't been so bad... I touch it up with Matt black nail varnish.

Modern acrylic paints just arnt as hard as old solvent paints.

You can still get enamel paints, I use a tin of black to touch up any markings on the black exposed bit of handlebars.

The Cannondale tandem we bought in 1994 has no chips , just chain slap scuffs and a few gouges where the chain has run over the inner ring.. I think it's all about the prep and primer before the top coat goes on. Its been our old touring bike for quite a few years.

I have had a couple of Kinesis CX frames, I liked the geometry and the fact they had mudguard eyes, but the paintwork left a lot to be desired.
I have just had a Chesini frame powder coated at a wheel refurbishing shop, it still had the original 1992 paint which was still pretty good, but it had a lot of nicks and scrapes after 31 years.

Is it an aluminum frame? Aluminum is harder to get paint to stick to than steel. I personally hate painting the stuff, mess up a bit on one step and the paint peels in sheets!

Another reason ( reason #357 I believe ) to buy steel.

That said, I also have a 90s Cannondale tandem in the garage and its paint is of mysteriously good quality.

The Trek is Aluminium, they have had a few years trying and get it right😩 but no joy. I might strip it and spray on a few coats of automotive lacquer to toughen it up before trying a proper respray.
