I do if I want a real quality finish, I do not if I am in a rush. The OP looked inexperienced so I offered what I thought was good advice for a quality job.

Now how long to take a door off, let us say 2 minutes off 3 minutes back on, nice warm well ventilated workshop to work in, no masking up needed, no fumes in the house, no dust in the house, seems a no brainer to me.

No I do not paint for a living have done in the past though but they were cars and need a lot higher standard of preparation and application to reach a desired finish.

I was told by the painters on site that properly recessed countersunkscrews should be lightly painted with an oil based paint 1st , then filled, rubbed down, primed and overpainted. stops the head rusting back through the paint. doorsets come pre hung these days so no worry about the bare timber beneath. pet hate is external doors and frames with no protection under the hinge. oh and no protection on the bottom edge. I mean would you go out in the rain with your botom hanging out . hmmm perhaps cycling forum not best forum to ask that question.

You lot take decorating far more seriously than I do. Leave door on, but take off handles and latch and latchplate as they are a pain to cut paint around and re-fit after glossing- replace those hinges with brass or stainless steel ones [depending on handles] with matching screws. Mild steel hinges are awful.

Jeeze, I can't believe some people on here would actually leave the door in place and try to paint around the hinges or even paint OVER them! Have they no pride in their workmanship? Painting the woodwork then replacing the door and hinges gives a nice crisp professional look to the job, not sloppy and messy like a student house. Anyway it's far easier to paint the frame without the door getting in your way.

The door is a fire door and I will probably varnish rather than paint it.
I think I might take the door off (even though it weighs a ton) to paint the frame, then re-hang the door.

that's the point. Mild steel hinges will go nasty.

And if you really want to get jiggy with the screw heads, recess and hardwood pellet them. (Says the man that always insists on screwed down floor board being hardwood pelleted. There's no finer recipe for popularity!!!)

just had a nasty flashback to my first house. I did that on the 1st floor and nearly drove me bonkers. did look nice when polished up properly though
