I tried to pay for a tyre repair today with a paper £10 note and found out that they are no longer legal tender.
My local Aldi automated till still accepts them so I bought five packets of microwave rice, one at a time.
It saved me a walk to the bank but I've now got over £20 in change!

How much was the rice?

I found an old paper £5, tried to swap it in a local TSB but was told I had to bank it into my current account.
I don’t bank with TSB and my local branch is miles away so I never bothered.

When I saw that the tenners were being changed, I looked in all the places I keep cash and collected them together, then paid them into the bank .

While checking my saddle bag before a ride yesterday, I noticed that my emergency cash contained an old £10.

Drat, and double Drat!

I suppose the bank is used to old duffers paying in a single note .

Consider it a souvenir that you've acquired for the sum of £5.

On the bright side, its resale value should in theory never drop, as the Bank of England on their website promise to honour all withdrawn banknotes of theirs at face value for ever.

What's a £10 note? One is only familiar with the red ones

Same story here. My dear old Mum (98) didn't know we'd gone plastic. She had £70 in paper tenners. TSB (no account but the only bank left) in town gave that answer ^^. Apparently it's to prevent "laundering" they said. Yeah - that's one big drugs haul that is - £70  So we gave her some plastic and hope we can get our £70 back from our bank

It'll cost you a tenner to find out though.

You end up with too many of those. Need to get your hands on some of these.
