Paragon of City commuting gear

I've commuted on a Brompton, a 30 year old Dawes Kingpin, a carbon TT bike (if training after work), a fixed gear road bike, 'cross bike, Airnimal, a number of road bikes and rigid MTBs.

They're all good.

If I had to narrow my commute bike down to just one I'd have a touring or 'cross style bike (with mudguard eyes) with three sets of wheels shoed up with 28 mm slicks (this set would have a dynohub front), mud tyres and studded tyres. I could do anything with those.

a smile and a pleasant demeanour usually suffices. Nice weather helps. Bike? Doesnt matter much, as long as it goes.

All the gear and no idea always makes me think of the way Monnet senior taught me to spot a real 'bikie' - they'll either have new clothing and a shagged out bike or a shiny bike and threadbare kit. Plenty to be said for that - especially on winter clubruns.

More on thread, aside from a functioning bicycle all you really need is some quality lights and bit of reflective stuff. After that wear what's comfortable and suits your requirements.

Something you like riding, primarily. If you dread getting on the thing every morning, what's the point, after all?

Currently, for me, it's the Brompton - folds up small enough that I can get on any train, and it can come into any office or site with me. In the summer, I'll be on the SCR2 or LHT. The only stipulation I make regarding extraneous kit is that there be some way to carry luggage on the bike, being fed up with sweaty rucksacks.

I took the rack off, but it could be re-fitted.
