Paul, bike is in front of me now, printed on top tube 'Crossfire 1' halfords still have them on website.

Yep seen it now and with 45C too, my wife and I must have had an earlier edition than the "1" with 35C tyres. I'm still concerned at 45C at over 70 psi on 17mm rims though.

Although I've now got 35s on I'm concerned that the incident could be 'just one of those things'. Is it possible that new track pump gauge is giving innacurate reading? Marathon + to rigid for 'pinch test'.

What Pauluk said. Try getting hold of a different pressure gauge to see if your track pump is accurate. Maybe a friendly LBS will check the pressures for you.

Don't worry about the bike. Carrera is a good brand, and I've ridden on worse with no issues.

Out of interest, was the front wheel the same type as the rear? Maybe it could have been swapped at some point.

Thanks HovR, yes identical wheels in excellent condition, bike hardly used and definitely not abused !
Will check with LBS tomorrow.

I have 40C tyres on a 17 mm rim.
I had read up that 38 would be OK so knowing the nature of Marathon XR I went and bought a couple of pairs of 40mm that were on offer. Obviously great tyres unlike my original Kendas

Having disc brakes takes away much of worrying about rims being worn out and failing. Of course, rims can fail due to other reasons too, but personally, I have only seen or experienced cases where rims fail due to being worn out from the v style brakes.

Then the bike itself was probably made from very low quality materials using very cheap and unreliable manufacturing processes and testing. Riding such bikes is usually very dangerous, as pedals can break while riding, frames can snap, brakes can break etc.
I didn't have the time nor inclination last night to reply to your patronising post. I had already given details of both the bike and the problem. It appears you just jumped in. I thought this page was was for 'Beginners', yet you seem to be such an expert you can sort out peoples queries without even knowing what the freaking subject was in the first place.

Had no bad intentions, and definitely did not pretend to be an expert in any way, as I am not one.
Sorry if I offended you mate.
