You're absolutely right, I read too quickly. However, I stand by my suggestion.

Actually, having now observed students in years 6-9, I'm amazed at how quickly (and openly) they inform on each other's misdeeds.

Old enough to know the difference between right and wrong....if you want to continue getting on well with the parents..keep shtum...he will get caught red handed soon enough, and then have to deal with it...kids of that age don't like being lectured to.

Have the trainers been reported as missing or stolen ?

Assuming this happened at school it is a school matter and you should report what has happened to them. That's of course if you are sure of the facts.
