The BBC have found that most parents lie to their children.

What a surprise! Perhaps the next step of the PC brigade will be to call for a stop to this outrageous practice. So when little Johnny or Susan asks where babies come from, be prepared to answer some more questions. And Santa Claus will be a thing of the past too.

Surely then, ALL parents lie to their children at some point, for their childrens sake?

My twenty two year old son is still convinced that, when I told him seven years ago that I'd bequeathed my vinyl collection to a colleague, I was telling the truth. It's been my most successful wind up at Chateau Levy. He's still hoping that I might rewrite my will....

Who in their right minds threaten their kids with the police?
And what is wrong with telling your kids the truth, when they aks where Babies come from, If they can frame the question they old enough to know and deserve an answer.
Tooth fairy and Santa yes I lied, but that was my choice to preserve a little bit of childhood magic

I've been quite truthful with my son, I've always answered his questions about where babies come from in a straight forward, down to earth fashion.

However, when he burst into my room the other night and demanded to know what me and OH were doing (there was a bit of under the duvet wriggling going on) I told him the OH was tickling me!

I do, I often tell my 5 year old daughter that if she doesnt go the school the Police will come and get her! What's wrong with that?
I know a family that put their daughter in the car and drove to the Police station. They parked outside and pretended to make a call on their mobile to the police.

Too me you're abdicating the discipline and control of your child to a "higher authority"

"If you don't quiet down and start behaving, the lady over there will be angry with you.''

This one winds me up. I'm a paediatric nurse and I've lost count of the number of times that parents of my patients have threatened their child that'll I'll do something bad to them if they don't behave. They're often already scared shitless of whats happening, without that. In these cases I'm afraid I have to blow the parents story out of the water!

That one used to wind me up during my days in the Police. Badly behaved child; parent sees Police uniform; parent tells child "that Policeman is coming to take you away if you don't behave". I do believe that children/people in general should have a healthy fear of authority, but that doesn't extend to making small children think that they are going to be taken away from their parents by the Police for throwing a tantrum. In any case, the same parents will probably tell the same child in his teenage years that he can do no wrong, and that the Police have no right to try and stop them doing whatever the hell they want.

My wife was the same when working on the ward.

some of the parents got it the right way round that if the child didn't behave that she would be upset which is easier and happier to work with.

Since when were the police sole authority on poor behaviour? This simply perpetuates the ruinous attitude that unless there's a likelihood of the police being involved, people don't have to adhere to rules. Try telling her she has to go to school because you says she has to... after all, it's actually your responsibility to get her to school.
