do you need a passport to board ferries going to Hebrides or Shetland if your a british national ?

Not unless they are staying in the EU after 29 March. All the same, could be a good idea to travel with photo ID so you can prove you are the person who made the booking.

You don't even need one entering France. I forgot mine once when going to Belgium but they just waived me through.

You used to need photo ID going to Shetland but that was dropped some years ago. The Bolshy natives here in the Hebs. would get a bit stroppy if having to produce ID for boarding. Think also of the nightmare of checking tourist ID for up to 1000 people in about 10 or 15 minutes.
