For the past two years I got a "cost of living" which is pretty underwhelming, but at least its something. Frankly I think anything given as standard and not based upon your work record and ability is pretty damn generous.

Got 1% last July, have since had a two year pay freeze imposed.
No real complaints about that. However the pay freeze is supposed to take effect from April 2011, so we should have had a rise on 1st July. Sadly employers are refusing, so in effect its a 3 year pay freeze.

Had no pay rise last year, just several bouts of short time. This year had a pay cut, got made redundant at the beginning of January and since the middle of January I've been doing agency work for an amount just above the minimum wage, but its better than signing on.

3.5% April this year. However the next rise will have to be substantial - into double figures - as company is losing quantities of experienced people to competitors who are offering anything up to 30% more. Staff leaving are proving difficult to replace, a 'no thanks' when payscales are discussed. Companies are now reaping the results of no training / recruiting money saving policy for a long period.
Still, alright for the rest of us

yes indeedy, a lot of people have been cushioned due to reduced mortgage payments but the banks are getting itchy. All that filthy lucre just sitting waiting to be had, all they need to do is key in a little number change. Though they're a little worried about the potential for hyper inflation. Some estimates reckon it could dwarf that seen in the early 90's and get up around the 25% mark.

How does hyper-inflation happen?

It depends where you work really.

In the present climate there is general doom and gloom and many firms are not doing well so ask their workers to do their bit. Where I woked the incoming work dropped to half what it was so half the staff (inc me) were chucked out.

However that is not always the case. Some firms (Tesco for example) are doing well in the recession as people downgrade their supermarket choice.

So it is more down to how well the firm is doing or not. If they are doing badly then fair enough, if they are doing well then they are conning you.

Haven't had a pay rise for 2 years. And infact my salary has dropped by 20% due to me going to a voluntary 4 day week. But will be getting 10% back as I will soon start longer hours on each of the 4 days

And they're doing it at the suppliers expense.
Worked in the frozen food industry for 23 years, ultimately supplying the supermarkets. They slowly ate the heart out of any profits till we were all made redundant 10 years ago. So what do i do ?...get another job in a different industy, but still supplying the supermarkets. It was a very very lucrative company when i joined but i warned them what'll happen....and it slowly has.
Enormous pay rises (15/25% some years) early on, but thats all gone now.
No rise for the last 2 years, very handsome bonus's have gone....in fact some of the management/salaried staff had a 20% wage CUT imposed last year.
It's freeking tough out there  . Dont see a cats chance in hell of a rise this next year either.
