Newbie here.

I have a norco valence bike with standard pedals but I want change over to cleats

BUT

I have never used them before. Evans cycle advised me to start with keo easy pedals with grey cleats. ( it's all comes packaged together)

It this good advise???

Personally, I would start with Shimano SPD multi release cleats. With these in your shoes you can walk normally, and, because they release from any angle, pull out if caught out!

I agree. Go for something like Shimano M520s...they're great (and reasonably cheap so if you don't get on with clipless you haven't lost much).

Depends whether you want to be able to walk in your bike shoes. If so, the usual advice is Shimano SPDs, which have a recessed cleat.

I got SPDs, used the supplied cleats which aren't multi release, and with the lowest tension on the pedal I've had no problems - the few near misses I had early on I have been able to release well enough in time by just pulling the foot.

I was looking at the M520s but got the A530 because it has one side clipless, and one side platform so you can use normal shoes too. Don't know about your riding habits, however, it was needless in the end for me because no matter whether I do 10 miles or 60 I always go clipless and never use the platform side. The M520 would have been fine for me.

I went for M520's when switching from flats to clipless, but went with the 'normal' release cleats rather than the multi-release ones. No particular reason, just the pedals came with them and the shop I bought from didn't have the multi's in stock. So far I've only good things to say about them, and with the tension loosened right off I find it's easy to clip in, easy to clip out, I can pull up on the pedal pretty hard when riding and have been able to yank my foot free in the few "Oh god, I really need to get my foot down NOW!" moments I've had.

As for where to buy them, I got mine from Go Outdoors in the sales and they cost me about £15, but you can get them at a lot of online stores for that sort of price anyway. CRC have them for £15.99 which is the cheapest I've seen lately, but then I've not really been looking. You'll also (probably) need different shoes then you would for the cleats you mentioned in your first post (worth considering if you've already invested in some cycling shoes), but they can cost as much or as little as you want, running from twenty-odd quid right through to hundreds of pounds. Again, mine came from Go Outdoors in the sales and cost me £45ish. I'd say it's been the best money I've spent on the bike so far and now have trouble going back to flat pedals.

That's what I've got on my two bikes with a pair of Shimano MO88 cycling shoes

Good reasonably priced combo

Just wind the tension in the pedals back a bit and you can clip in and out very easily

I've only had a couple of rides since I fitted mine but I know I won't be going back to flat pedals!!

I am thinking of getting some a 530s for the winter mtb/ride with kids bike, currently have m530s with the bigger cage on it and i could do with flats on one side to save having to faff about with cycle specific shoes .
On the other bikes i have a520 and a 600`s and i do like them as a minimalist look and the ability to walk and not look like a duck
