removed my pedals today due to a horrible grinding type noise coming from them and sure enough i could see the exposed balls so stuck some grease in there and will replace pedals soon
but was wondering surely the bearings out to at least have some sort of dust cover over them? can i get pedals with completely sealed bearings? and is there anyway to service pedal bearings?
Cheers Ed

I'm not trying to make you feel like an idiot.

If you Google 'Can I disassemble bicycle pedals', you get the same video as my link. Why not watch it and ask questions afterwards if you don't understand?

in a nutshell Young Ed... yes you can.

this is the best image i can find that shows how a bicycle pedal's bearings are assembled...

just concentrate on the assembly of items 20 through to 24 as most pedals will assemble into the pedal housing in a similar way.
*item 25 is the dust cap by the looks of it.... and not sure if you'll find item 22, that may be another dust cap.

the tricky bit is getting to the retaining nuts (24) as they're often in a 'well', so you may need a spanner a bit like this...

and even then it still may not fit.. i think i ended up fiddling with long nosed pliers and a socket last time i did mine... but getting them back together 'just so' was a tad trickier than taking them apart.

have a bash though.... it's all part of the fun.

got a couple good socket sets so will give it a bash

another question......being a cnc engineer (the term i prefer for a kid who just messes about with the schools cnc mill!) i was wondering could i make a pair of aluminum pedals on the cnc mill? got access to a metal lathe as well if it helps
not to save time or money but because i need a project badly and the feeling of using something you made is just great!

Remember some pedals aren't worth sorting out. If you can see the bearings then they are quite cheap. SPD/Look etc are relatively easy to service. Just undo lockring, and screw the axel assembley out, regrease and pop together.

As for CNC'ing your own, go for it, but take the bearings and axel from other pedals. You'll just need to replicate the internal measurements and threads for the axel to bolt back on. Good project !
