I use spd's for commuting/ winter bike, easier to walk in and spd-sl's for summer. Somebody will correct me if I'm wrong but I believe speed plays are best for your knees as there's lot of float but some people can't get on with them as there's too much float and they describe it as like being on ice; I've never used them however.

Whats the differance between fixed & floating cleats
Basically with fixed cleats your foot alignment is 'fixed' in one position, whereas floating cleats allow your foot alignment to rotate ('float') around a stationary point the cleat. The former may be bad for your knees, the latter allows the foot to rotate to natural angles that are easier on the knee.

Too much float can be just as bad for your knees as not enough. I had to ditch a pair of Time Impact pedals owing to having to almost turn my foot back to front to unclip.
